  3. The American Association of Marriage Counselors founded family therapy in 1942.
  4. From the beginning of the 1950s on, the work of anthropologists gave the movement a big boost.
  5. By the middle of the 1960s, there were several different types of family therapy.
  6. Network therapy began to be used in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
  7. By the late 1970s, clinical experience, particularly in treating major mental diseases, had led to certain model revisions and a softening of some of the earlier stridency and theoretical purism.
  8. From the mid-1980s to the present, the area has seen a variety of approaches that partly mirror the founding schools but also draw on individual psychotherapy theories and practises.
