- The social work movements of the 19th century in the United Kingdom and the United States may have been the start of family therapy as a separate profession in Western cultures.
- The American Association of Marriage Counselors founded family therapy in 1942.
- From the beginning of the 1950s on, the work of anthropologists gave the movement a big boost.
- By the middle of the 1960s, there were several different types of family therapy.
- Network therapy began to be used in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
- By the late 1970s, clinical experience, particularly in treating major mental diseases, had led to certain model revisions and a softening of some of the earlier stridency and theoretical purism.
- From the mid-1980s to the present, the area has seen a variety of approaches that partly mirror the founding schools but also draw on individual psychotherapy theories and practises.
