The Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 every year and India this time is going to be Celebrate 74th Republic Day in 2024. On 26th January 1950, India Celebrates Republic Day as Constitution of India came into effect by replacing the Government of India Act (1935).
On this day, the transition of India from as an autonomous Commonwealth realm to a fully sovereign republic in the Commonwealth of Nations and also from British Monarch as nominal head of the Indian Dominion to the President of India as nominal head of the Indian Union is also commemorated on this day.
The Indian Constituent Assembly made law for the Constitution on 26th November 1949 and it came to into force on 26th January 1950. The Constitution has a democratic governance structure with completing the country’s transition to independence. The date of 26 January was chosen because on this day in 1929 that the Indian National Congress proclaimed the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj).
On 4th November 1947, the committee drafted and submitted a draught constitution to the Constituent Assembly. Before adopting the Constitution, the Assembly met for 166 days in public sessions during a two-year period of 11 months and 18 days. The 308 members of the Assembly signed two handwritten copies of the document both in Hindi and also in English) on January 24, 1950. Two days later ie. on 26th January 1950 It went into force nationwide after much deliberation and some amendments.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s first tenure as President of the Indian Union began on that date. Under the new Constitution’s transitional provisions, the Constituent Assembly was renamed Parliament of India.
The President addresses the country on the eve of Republic Day. The primary Republic Day event takes place on the Rajpath in New Delhi in front of the President of India. On this day, ceremonial parades are held on the Rajpath as a tribute to India, its unity in diversity, and its rich cultural legacy.
