Albuminuria

What is Ambuminuria

Albuminuria is a symptom of renal illness in which there is too much albumin in the urine. The protein albumin is found in the blood. It is also called as Proteinuria.

Cause of Albuminuria

Usually Albumin from the blood is not allowed to flow into the urine by a healthy kidney. It is excreted in the urine if kidney is damaged. A healthy kidney has lower albumin concentration. Albuminuria or Proteinuria is frequently caused by either long-term hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels) or hypertension in diabetics (high blood pressure).

Symptoms of Albuminuria

For detection the presence of albumin in the urine dipstick test is performed on a urine sample.

  • Jaundice -Yellowish skin.
  • Fatigue-Tiredness.
  • Weight loss.
  • Fever Sometimes
  • Vomiting and diarrhea occasionally.
  • Urine Color Dark or gray and pale color stools.
  • Pain below the right ribs along with the stomach area.
  • Tenderness below right rib sometimes.

Categories of Persistent Albuminuria

  • A1-Normal to mildly increased:< 30 mg/g (< 3 mg/mmol)
  • A2-Moderately increased:30-300 mg/g (3-30 mg/mmol)
  • A3-Severely increased: > 300 mg/g >30 mg/mmol)

Risk of High level concentration in Urine.

It can be life threatening in some cases causing

  • Kidney Damage
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Heart Failure
  • Cirrhosis
  • Lupus

Treatment of Albuminuria

Though it is not a disease so there is no treatment for albuminuria itself. But it is a side effect or symptoms of diabetes or hypertension leads to kidney disease. Early kidney damage should be checked by not to leak larger amounts of albumin into the urine. Drinking water will not treat the cause of protein in your urine unless you are dehydrated.

  • One should monitor the protein in diet.
  • Increase fresh vegetables and fiber in daily routine.
  • Lose Weight if you are over weight.
  • Avoid foods high in sodium and Salt.
