Olland

There is a small island in the Netherlands called Olland, with only 16 inhabitants. The main problem of the island is that there is a regular flood here every winter. No dam wall has been built to protect the sea from the floodwaters as the sea tides enter the tidal island. So the residents have to be trapped during the tide. Such islands are known as ‘Hajig’. The railway line was laid here in 1923. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the main island by small train. Currently, the Dutch people use the railway to travel to the main island. Almost all of its inhabitants are elderly. The Netherlands has the smallest lighthouse in the Netherlands, which is only 24 feet high, reluctant to leave the island despite the floods due to the noisy environment here.
