It is a paid state holiday in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia, among other places and official holiday in other states.
Some states give state workers a day off. Some stores, post offices, and other businesses may close or have limited hours
Many public transit systems follow a timetable, however modifications may occur. Large public events may affect local traffic.
City halls, libraries, schools and post offices exhibit banners, yard signs and flags. Business conference rooms promote the festival.
