World Ozone Day 2024 – History, Significance, Theme, Quotes

World Ozone Day 2024 or International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed on September 16. To protect the ozone layer by implementing measures to limit worldwide production and consumption of depleting compounds, with the ultimate goal of eliminating them based on advances in scientific knowledge and technological information. It demonstrates that collaborative decisions and action guided by science are the only ways to address big global challenges.

History of World Ozone Day

The United states General Assembly chose December 19, 2000, to commemorate the date in 1987 when states signed the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The UN General Assembly declared September 16, 1994, as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987. The hole in the ozone layer closed 30 years after the protocol was signed. Because of the nature of the chemicals that cause ozone depletion, their chemical impacts are likely to last for 50 to 100 years.
