History of World No Tobacoo Day

In 1987, WHO Member States established World No Tobacco Day to raise global awareness of the tobacco pandemic and the needless deaths and diseases it causes. This day is also intended to highlight the broad prevalence of tobacco use and its severe health consequences, which presently account for more than 8 million deaths globally every year, including 1.2 million caused by nonsmokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco business have all expressed enthusiasm and opposition to the day worldwide.
