Veto Power

A permanent member state’s veto power means that if any of the permanent member nations votes against a pending UNSC decision, the resolution will not be approved.

The UN Security Council’s “veto power” is the ability of the UN Security Council’s five permanent members. If a permanent member does not agree with a proposed resolution but does not want to cast a veto, it can choose to abstain, allowing the resolution to pass if it receives the needed nine positive votes.

How is veto power given

Article 27(3) of the UN Charter stipulates that non-procedural votes in the Security Council “must be made by an affirmative vote of nine members, including the concurring votes of the permanent members”— this is known as the permanent members’ veto authority.
