Eligibility of Indian Presidents

  • Article 58 of the Indian Constitution lays out a few requirements for a candidate to be eligible for the presidency. The following are only a few examples:
  • The President should be an Indian national.
  • Must be at least 35 years old.
  • The President should be eligible to run for election to the Lok Sabha.
  • Under the State Government, Union, and other local authorities, the President of India shall not have any profit-making offices.

Interesting Facts About India’s Presidents

  1. The President of India’s official residence, Rashtrapati Bhavan, was once known as Viceroy’s House. This was built during the reign of Viceroy of India Charles Hardinge. When Rajendra Prasad became the first President and moved into this edifice, it was dubbed Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  2. In 1969, after Zakir Hussain died in office, V V Giri became India’s first Acting President.
  3. After only a few months, V V Giri was elected full-fledged President. He was the only one who served as both Acting President and President at the same time.
  4. Two presidents died while in office .Zakir Husain and Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad.
  5. Mohammad Hidayatullah, the only President (Acting) who previously served as Chief Justice of India.
  6. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy is the only President to have served as a State’s first Chief Minister. He was Andhra Pradesh’s first Chief Minister.

  8. A P J Abdul Kalam, the only President who was a scientist.
