History of the Memorial Day

On May 30, 1868, Memorial Day was first observed nationally. In remembrance of the Union soldiers who had lost their lives in the American Civil War, Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic declared May 30 to be Decoration Day. Numerous local observances that were started between the end of the Civil War and Logan’s declaration came before this national one. Numerous cities and individuals have asserted that they were the first to notice it. The “idea of strewing the graves of Civil War soldiers—Union and Confederate” with flowers, however, was credited to Mary Ann Williams by the National Cemetery Administration, a branch of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
