This is a very old saying. Once upon a time all gods came together and prayed to Lord Shiva, pleading, ‘this Kali Yuga is full of all kinds of sins and we don’t get anything offered by an impure man Please tell us the day when all the sins of the year will be purified.
Hearing this, Lord Shiva consoled the gods and said, “The day you are requesting a relationship is the night of the 14th day of Falgun Krishnapaksha. This time is perfect for cleansing all the sins of man, because on this day I am infected with all the moving and immobile shibboleths in the underworld. From this Lord Shiva has been worshiped and Maha Shivratri is being celebrated.
