The International Day for Universal Access to Information was officially declared on 15 October 2019 during the 74th UN General Assembly, which took place on 28 September. The day was originally established by the UNESCO General Conference. It was launched in November 2015 and observed for the first time on 28 September 2016.

Global Conference.
Celebration and Observation International day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) 2026
- Purpose: To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the day’s designation, a Global Conference on Universal Access to Information will be jointly hosted by UNESCO and the government of the Philippines.
- Date: September 29–30, 2025.
- Place: Manila, Philippines.
- Purpose: The day serves as a reminder of the fundamental human right to seek, receive, and disseminate information, which is crucial for transparent governance, sustainable development, and social inclusion.
