“Deepam Jyoti Parabrahma” is a revered Hindu shloka recited when lighting a lamp (diya) during morning or evening prayers. It represents the light of the lamp as the Supreme Being (Brahman) and the eradicator of ignorance, invoking the dispelling of darkness and sins, while ushering in prosperity and health.
The prevalent mantra associated with Deepam lighting, known as the Deep Jyoti Mantra, is “Subham Karoti Kalyanam, Arogyam Dhana Sampadah, Shatru Buddhi Vinashaya, Deepa Jyoti Namostute”. This shloka is recited to call forth prosperity, health, and wisdom, while eliminating ignorance, and serves to honor the light that dispels.
Primarily, deepam represents knowledge. All our actions ought to be guided by the illumination of knowledge, particularly the understanding of dharma. Through this knowledge, ignorance or darkness is eliminated. We pay homage to knowledge, which is the most significant wealth in our lives.
