Types of Cyclone by Wind Speed
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) classifies low pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea by damage capacity, which the WMO uses.
SL. No. | Type of Disturbances | Wind Speed in Km/h) | Wind Speed in Knots |
1 | Low Pressure | Less than 31 | Less than 17 |
2 | Depression | 31-49 | 17-27 |
3 | Deep Depression | 49-61 | 27-33 |
4 | Cyclonic Storm | 61-88 | 33-47 |
5 | Severe Cyclonic Storm | 88-117 | 47-63 |
6 | Super Cyclone | More than 221 | More than 120 |
Classification of Cyclone by Damage Capacity
Wind speed classifies cyclones into five levels. They are further classified by damage potential.
SL.No | Cyclone Category | Wind Speed in Km/h | Damage Capacity |
1 | 1 | 120-150 | Minimal |
2 | 2 | 150-180 | Moderate |
3 | 3 | 180-210 | Extensive |
4 | 4 | 210-250 | Extreme |
