The Chief Justice of India. The highest-ranking member of the Indian federal judiciary, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, will become the 49th Chief Justice of India on August 27, 2022. He takes over for Judge NV Ramana.

The highest-ranking member of the Indian federal judiciary is the chief justice of India, who also serves as head judge of the Supreme Court of India. According to the Indian Constitution, the president of India has the authority to choose the next chief justice, who will hold office until he or she turns 65 or is removed by impeachment, after consulting with the outgoing chief justice. According to tradition, the chief justice who is currently serving will nearly always offer the selection of the next senior Supreme Court justice.

Role of Chief Justice of India

The chief justice, who serves as the top justice of the Supreme Court, is in charge of assigning cases to constitutional benches that deal with significant legal issues. The chief justice assigns all work to the other judges in accordance with Article 145 of the Indian Constitution and the Supreme Court Rules of Procedure of 1966, and those judges are required to refer the case back to them (for re-allocation) in any situation where they feel it needs to be reviewed by a larger bench of more judges.

The chief justice oversees administrative tasks such as maintaining the roster, selecting court employees, and handling other general and unrelated issues pertaining to the management and operation of the Supreme Court.

Judge Uday Umesh Lalit sits on India’s Supreme Court. On August 10, 2022, President Droupadi Murmu named him Chief Justice of India. On August 27, 2022, he will take the oath of office to become the 49th Chief Justice of India. He worked as a senior attorney at the Supreme Court before being elevated to the position of judge.

Born on November 9, 1957. Enrolled as an Advocate in June, 1983. Practised in the High Court of Bombay till December, 1985, practised law in the High Court of Bombay. changed his location of business to Delhi in January 1986. The Supreme Court appointed the Senior Advocate in April 2004. acted as an amicus curiae in numerous cases. Special Public Prosecutor for CBI appointed to conduct trials in all 2G cases in accordance with Supreme Court directives. Two times as a member of the Supreme Court of India’s Legal Services Committee. On August 13, 2014, a judge of the Indian Supreme Court was appointed. to leave the workforce on November 8, 2022.
