Basanta Utsav

Basanta Utsav literally means the “spring celebration. Dol Utsav season is between Falgun and Chaitra. During this season, nature displays its own beauty with Palash, Shimul, and other brilliant flowers. Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore established the wonderful tradition of celebrating spring festival in Bengal at Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan. Basant Utsav is essentially the same as Holi, except for the grace with which it is observed.

In the month of March, on the day of Holi, Basant Utsav is conducted to greet spring with music and dances. On this festival day, teachers and students exchange Abir greetings.

Holi may be celebrated across the country, but the elegant Basanta Utsav is exclusive to Bolpur in Santiniketan. Santiniketan, which called as ‘the abode of peace,’ is one of Bengal’s most historically significant cities.

This year’s event will take place on March 16th. It is observed to usher in the Spring season, which is known as the season of hope. At almost every distance, Thakurs are offered offerings, as well as Dakshinas. For the Thakurs, the bhoga offered in each hand is called the Dwari bhoga. Madanmohan and Lakshmi win at Dolabedi.
